What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an empirically valid intervention that has helped an estimated 2 million people relieved of symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks, panic attacks, and any such disturbing symptoms that are keeping you from growing to your full potential.
No one knows how neurobiology works, however, we do know that when a person is very upset, the brain cannot process information as it does ordinarily. Trauma occurs in a split second and areas of the brain in the limbic system gets bypassed and/or isolated causing the symptoms. When the processing gets side tracked it causes havoc in the brain and body.
EMDR has a direct effect on the way the brain processes information and allows for one to integrate the experience in a healthy manner. Normal information processing is resumed, so folllowing a successful EMDR session, a person no longer relives the images, sounds and feelings when the event is brought to mind. You still remember what happened, yet it does not have the fright or flight to the memory and the body sensation subside.
EMDR is similar to what occurs naturally during dreaming or REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Therefore, EMDR can be thought of as a physiologically based therapy that helps a person see disturbing material in a new and less distressing way.
If you are suffering from symptoms that are keeping your from growing and enjoying life please know that EMDR can help you.
Please give us a call if you have questions -- we will be happy to meet with you to discuss further whether you would benefit from an EMDR treatment.
WE ARE UTILIZING THE PROGRAM "EASY EMDR" REMOTELY FOR TREATMENTS DURING THE PANDEMIC.
